I didn’t take Jay to the doctor at his 4-year because I decided to wait and do him and Ada’s yearly check-up at the same time. For school paperwork, his last check-up needs to be within 6 months of me filing out said paperwork, and if I had taken him around his birthday, it would have been over that and I would have had to take him again. Bureaucracy. Love it.

Jay ended up getting his spot at Raintree starting in June instead of September, so his paperwork is due next week and not in July, so I had to take him today to get all the paperwork done. Since we like paperwork and charts and numbers, here are his numbers that will be on His Permanent Record.

Height: 3ft. 7in. Almost exactly. He was under that line by about a millimeter. That puts him just under the 90th-percentile. According to the CDC.

Weight: Just under 35 lbs, fully clothed. That puts his dot just tiny bit over the 25th percentile.

It just tells me what I already know. My baby Jay is not a baby. His warm, soft, squishy tummy is no longer squishy. In order to get pants that fit him in length, they are always too big for his waist.

I also went ahead and did his 5-year, pre-K vax. He could have them now, or we could have waited until next year. I went ahead. Now he doesn’t need anymore until they either change the state law. Again. Or when he is 11? I’m forgetting. Which is good because it took 3 nurses and myself to administer the shots. My boy is also strong. We may have needed an extra person if we waited another year. By the time he needs more, hopefully he’ll be less combative.

Ada’s yearly check is June 3rd. Her numbers are probably about the same as Jay. She has the same pants problem.

Around 9:00pm, Jay came into our room to share his brilliant solution to stopping the snot that had been plaguing him all day: he shoved a bead up his nose to keep it in. Wonderful!

After a quick look with a flashlight and a failed attempt to get it with tweezers, Mac hauled him to the ER. They tried pulling it out, suctioning it out, and covering his non-beaded nose and blowing through his mouth to get him to blow it out. The only thing the ER successfully got out was all the snot that Jay tried to keep in. They got home a little before 1:00am with an appointment to see an ENT today.

The result from today’s appointment: The ENT couldn’t get it out either. It isn’t round, it is oval. It is far up his nose and turned, so the general consensus is that it isn’t going to come back out his nostril. All we can do now is wait until Friday to see if he will suck it up through his sinus and swallow it. We have been reassured that it is small enough that he won’t choke on it when that happens. If he hasn’t by his appointment on Friday, then the ENT will put Jay under general anesthesia and dig it out.

This will be one expensive bead once it is all over.

I’m so freakin’ tired, it is unbelievable. I’m happy that I made dinner for tonight last night. Warm-up was fast, and clean up was easy. I’m going to take a shower and go to bed. Now.

Working again is great. The only bad part about it so far is having to get up at 5:30am and my sudden thought that because I’m getting a paycheck again I need some of this jewelry, which is saying a lot because I don’t often wear jewelry. I have worn a necklace to work a couple of times so far.

Why, yes, I would totally wear an octopus necklace.

Ada’s class has a share box which is for the kids to bring educational items that the class then can use or something. I don’t know what they do with the box, honestly. Tonight at dinner, Jay suggested that she bring his underwear to put in the share box. In other words, I’ve got your educational item right here.

The story of first grade girl who almost gave up her Star Wars water bottle because she was being picked on generated a lot of positive support and confidence for one Little Girl of Awesome. Then ThinkGeek doubled the awesome by sending her a gift consisting of a Tauntaun Sleeping Bag, Wampa Rug, and Yoda Saber.

Since he had a doctor’s visit, I have more Jay stats — well, okay data that I then chart to stats. Anyhow.

Height: 42 inches, almost right on the dot, which is between the 90 and 95th percentile
Weight: 35.5-ish lbs–she was going between that and 36lbs. He was fully clothed and layered because it is cold outside. I usually have him get on the scale after a bath or shower, so he’s just wearing undies. Still around the 50th-percentile.

I took his measurements about two months ago, and he’s grown almost 1 inch and gained probably 1 lb or so. I guess this is why he wants to eat all the time. Constantly. All day. This makes up the majority of Jay’s conversations with me, “I’m hungry. My tummy is hungry. Mommy! I’m hungry!! Mooooom, my mouth needs food right now!”

We also had this interaction this week. He comes up to me with a play stethoscope, and says,

Jay: Bend down, mommy. I need to check your heart
Me: Okay (kneel down on one knee to get to his level)
Jay: Oh no, mommy! I don’t hear your heart. Your heart is broken!
Me: Or, as an alternate hypothesis, you could be detecting that my heart really isn’t that close to my kneecap. Close though, you could try to listening behind my knee.
Jay: You heart isn’t behind your knee! Silly mommy!
Me: Okay

Jay also told the nurse today that he had a rash on “both of his faces”–aka, his cheeks.

Conclusion: Saved money will be better spent paying for groceries when Jay hits puberty rather than, say, medical school.

And looking over at Jay, who is curled up beside me, I discover that he is asleep. It’s rare that he takes a nap, and when he does, it usually isn’t until about 4:00. I hope it is a virus-fighting nap.

ETA: Jay woke up from his nap, and the first thing he said was, “Mommy, I’m hungry. I’m hungry now.” Unfortunately, he’s not hungry enough to not think that ordering Butter Chicken tonight was “a yucky idea.”

*Cheeks that I’ve become aware at just how much I bend down to kiss them because I have to keep stopping myself because that virus-induced rash on both his “faces” is contagious.

Life seemed to be going so well and smoothly that I started looking up to the sky to watch out for the falling anvil. It hit me today.

Jay has a virus infection. He had some bumps on his back that looked like they could have been small bites. He woke up this morning and it was spread to his stomach, arms, neck and face. I took him to the doctor to look at it and got a diagnosis of it looking like a classic virus infection on his skin. The course of action would be to just wait while it runs it course. Oh, and yeah, he’s contagious.

The good part: he’s acting fine. He says it doesn’t itch or hurt. He isn’t scratching or acting like anything is bothering him, so I’ll believe him. He has no fever or runny nose or anything. Just a nasty looking rash.

The bad part: This is the only thing that makes it stressful. I have to go to work on Monday. Monday and Tuesday would be the days that I have no back-up sick care. Fabulous.

My plans for the next two days are cancelled while I keep Jay isolated here. Let’s just hope that it starts drying up and scabbing by Monday morning–the signal that he is no longer contagious. And let’s also hope that it doesn’t spread to give him that lacking fever or runny nose or sore throat. And let’s also hope that none of the rest of us get it.

I really, really need him to be better by Monday.

And I apologize to the Blond Family who was over here last night for pumpkin carving. It isn’t any sort of deadly disease. Jay isn’t even acting remotely affected by it. I still feel enough compassion to other parents that I feel the need to not pass on illness to their children.

I know most like to freshen up for Spring. I like to freshen up for Autumn as well. The kids’ closet was emptied today. A few large stuffed animals that were in there and not played with were set aside for Goodwill. Jay’s extra low bar was installed. Hanging clothes have been sorted through. Summer clothes that may fit next year have been moved to the top bars, non-fitting ones tossed in a donation bag. Ada’s clothes are big enough now that she can use adult hangers. Jay’s clothes are hanging on the good kid-size hangers. The mass of hangers from the store are leaving the house. I just need to find the coat portion of Ada’s old snow suit, and we have two good coats to toss in a coat drive. I have left to do: go through two drawers where I stash non-fitting clothes, find the stash of clothes for Ada that we were given from our friend’s daughter that she can finally wear, pack away and store the size 8 clothes for Ada that we just got from the same friends, have the kids try on snow boots. I’m betting both will need new pairs. Jay’s freakin’ feet will fit into almost nothing that has velcro. They are so wide and thick that I have to get two sizes too big to just shut the velcro, with the exception of his Spiderman ones*, which only needed to be one size bigger. I bought him one pair of tennis shoes with ties. The bad about those is that it is required for the kids to wear shoes they can put on themselves. That means no shoestrings until they know how to tie. Ada got new running shoes as well. She desires all of the sudden the need to learn how to tie, and her old running shoes are now too small. She’s practicing so she can wear them to school. Jay needs velcro shoes to wear to school, so we need to make a trip to Stride Rite.

We bought Ada her first real belt today. It is–I know you aren’t expecting this–Hello Kitty. She wore one of her new pairs of jeans today, and if she grows any at all before next Spring, they are going to be too short. However, the inside waist adjustment is at the smallest and it’s still a tad big such that she keeps pulling them up. We are going to need a 6 slim and a belt before long to keep pants on her.

Next up: toys. It is time for another culling in the playroom. My exciting life.

I have nothing to add on the cooking topic. I made some kind of crock pot curry. Stuff. Even though I added no liquid, by the time it was done, it contained a little too much liquid. So, soup of sorts. It smelled really, really, really good walking in the door from shoe/belt shopping. I’m going to hunt down a ricer so I can use it on cauliflower for occasions such as this.

My upper back and neck are feeling much better. I put off running again today, although mainly due to schedule. Tomorrow, I run.

I’ll leave you with a kid story, typed out for my archives. Ada asked Jay to marry her tonight, although she made it clear that he had to live in a pink house. He accepted, although he made it clear that she had to make him mac & cheese for dinner every night. I guess it is slightly better than when I had to hear them fight all the way to school about which one of them was going to marry Mac.

*Which, btw, I can have a coordinating pair of light up Spiderman shoes thanks to my small feet.

I had the kids bring some paper to the table before dinner was ready. Jay loves to draw things to gift me. He should at least be drawing bodiless people by now. If I ask him to draw me a shape, he will. On his own, just scribbles.

We set out to do some drawing work, Ada was working on numbers and Jay on drawing something that looks like something more than the wad of hair after I clean out my brush.

Ada ended up giving me two pages. On one was a person who was abducted by a spaceship. On the other one, she wrote 10, 20, 30 … 100, 200, 300 … 1000, 2000 and so on up to 90,000.

Jay also gave me two pieces of paper. I had prompted him by drawing a person and asking if he could draw me a person. He refused, but instead he handed me two pages of what could pass off as deformed green beans. It was a step above scribbles, so I asked him what they were. He said, “It’s poop!”

He drew me two pages full of poop.

After a brief rest, I am back to hauling kids to a class. That’s right. Kids. Today Jay made his debut. The nice part is Ada and Jay’s class were available back to back. They are both taking a tumbling class.

I wanted to get a run in now in my brief break before I have to head out again, come home, and head out yet again. However, I’ve been sleeping terribly, including waking up around 2:30-ish and not being able to go back to sleep until 5:30-ish and then waking up at 7:30-ish. Plus, it is already 92 outside and that combination makes napping win. I’ll run tomorrow morning or evening, whenever it is not in the 90s.
