If You Smell One Kid, Be Prepared To Smell Them All
I had to go back to Jay’s daycare this morning because that thing I kept thinking that I was forgetting all morning at home and couldn’t think what it was turned out to be his blanket and pillow. I went back home, got it, went back to his preschool, which is fine because I also wanted to go to The Merc, which is just down the road from his preschool. I did remember to leave Ada’s booster seat at school for her first bus trip to her local grade school that she is not going to so she can have speech therapy*.
I walked in to find his class sitting around the table eating breakfast. I went up to Jay and gave him a kiss. He was eating pancakes, so I said without knowing what reaction I was about to trigger, “Jay, you smell soooo good! You smell like a pancake!” Then the kid next to him asked if he smelled like a pancake, so I smelled him and confirmed that he smelled just as yummy. That set off an entire table of three year olds begging that I smell them. Yup, I smelled an entire table of three year olds this morning. Thankfully, they all smelled like pancakes.
Since I’m speaking of kids, Ada has three more days of summer school left. On September 1st, she goes back to school as a Kindergartner. Read that again. K-I-N-D-E-R-G-A-R-T-E-N. ‘m not sad or weepy about it like some parents. I’m just amazed at the passage of time and how it changes. She was a baby. Like yesterday.
I also stocked up on eggs this morning. The big egg recall scares me not because mine are from a local farm. One that packed them yesterday. I decided that I’m going to learn to make good Hollandaise. You know what is good with Hollandaise? Poached eggs. You know what the best type of egg is for poaching? A fresh one. The type of egg that is terrible for hard boiling, at least if you want to peel it, is perfect for poaching. I’ve made aioli before, or attempted. It didn’t work out quite right. Julia Childs has taught me what I did wrong. I’m going to hit all the egg emulsion sauces, including mayo.
I think I’ve found my first 5K. We have to figure out what we are doing for Thanksgiving first before I commit. We tossed around having Thanksgiving at our house this year. The 5K is on Thanksgiving morning. Me cooking and running at the same time won’t work. If we are out of town, that might not work much either if I am going to be in Kansas City that morning. If we do have it at our house, I could come up with a menu that can be prepped or made the night before as well. If it all works out, I’m going to run the Thanksgiving Day 5K Run on Sprint campus.
I’ll train like I’m going to run it. My goal is to not only run the entire thing, but also beat the people walking their babies in strollers.
*Budget cuts left private schools without dedicated school district support for special services. Ada was tested out of needing OT last school year, but she still needs speech therapy. Instead of having people dedicated to serve kids in their private schools, the kids now need to go to a public school to get the service. She has to be bussed from her private school to the public school. And it isn’t Sunflower, which is just 0.7 miles from Raintree. She gets bused to the school she would attend, Quail Run, which is 4.2 miles away if you get to take the road that is under construction, which you can’t, so you get to go the longer way. She gets picked up once a week for services that last 30 minutes. She’s the only one on the bus. For those who pay taxes for USD 497, but don’t have kids, thanks. Ada loves riding the bus.
I didn’t know that Ada was the only one riding the bus. I’m sure it makes her feel extra-special.
