Bye-Bye My Puppycake

We all dread the day, even though it comes for everybody at sometime. You know it will happen, but you aren’t prepared regardless. Squanto fell ill. Suddenly and in a bad way. He was extremely anemic to a point where he couldn’t walk.

My Squanto Puppycake died this evening, very peacefully with his human daddy by his side.

ETA: It was Hemangiosarcoma – a form of cancer that originates in the lining of blood vessels, and since blood vessels are everywhere, it can spread to almost anywhere in the body. Unless there is visible bleeding like through the nose, there isn’t really a way to know the dog has it until they show signs of anemia, like Squanto. It isn’t one that is curable or goes into remission. If caught early, the dog has about 6-8 weeks to live.

He was 15+ years old and had the deafness and gray to go with it. He had many good puppy years and spent almost all of his life with people who thought he was The Best Dog Ever. He was never neglected and never abused. He lived the perfect puppy life.

I’m still selfishly sad. He wasn’t just Squanto. He was The Squanto Puppycake. People who didn’t like dogs, liked him*. People who didn’t like small dogs, liked him. There will never be another one.

*Well, most. Mac didn’t. Mac doesn’t like any animal that gets within a 1/2 mile radius to him. But Mac loves me, so he tolerated Squanto and didn’t complain.

I’m so so sorry, Mel. I liked Squanto and I don’t like dogs or small dogs.
He was truly unique and a good companion, plus a real funny guy.
