Green Bags of Awesome
I tried my first green bags. I don’t mean “green” as a marketing term used to make you spend more money all in the name of Saving The Earth. I mean green as in they are slightly green and made out of zeolite which is used to absorb ethylene gas which is what makes your produce rot.
These are things that I likely wouldn’t have purchased, but one day my grocery was giving a box away with every $12 you spent in fresh produce. I didn’t know this until I checked out, but my grocery trips involves going to mostly only two parts of the store: dairy and eggs and then the produce section at the other end. I had enough to get two boxes. I’ve tried them, and I’m amazed at how long my grapes have lasted in them, as well as my fresh herbs. The key is to make sure your produce is dry, since I guess the zeolite will also absorb water over the gas, and then gas just builds up in the small space of the bag and makes it rot faster. I throw one paper towel in with the produce to help in the water absorption.
The rest of the bag? It could be made with a barrel of oil, an entire tree and a baby seal for all I know. I am happy with them though. If I can wash them and reuse them a few times–what I’m reading is that it works though about 10 washings–they are worth it for me. I’m about to put the celery I bought today in one. This is the produce I end up tossing the most because I don’t use nearly as much as you have to buy in a bunch before it is bad. Here’s hoping!
