Visit to KU and What’s Cooking Saturday

Dinner had to feed 6 kids and three adults. I decided on make-you-own pizza. I doubled my typical amount of dough. Toppings I made available: orange bell peppers, caramelized shallots and garlic, pineapple, cheese, pepperoni, chicken, Canadian bacon, Italian sausage, pizza sauce and BBQ sauce. I always make my pizza sauce, so I threw in some tomato that I picked up at the farmer’s market. I halved the weight so each kid could have a small one. Then I made three bigger ones. We ended up with one big one and one small one leftover for tomorrow. Steph and I made cookies after for dessert. Steph did a great job helping stretch out the dough and applying the olive oil.

After breakfast this morning, I took Ada, Steph and Josh to KU for Monarch Watch. This is the time of year where monarchs are migrating this way. They were able to catch and tag them for purposes of tracking migration. Then we went inside Foley so they could check out caterpillars, microscopes and the mating cages. Inside the room with the the mating cages, one kid walked in with her parents and said, “Those butterflies are friends!” I almost blurted out, “Yeah, friends with benefits.” Good thing my brain filter was working today.

After we left, I went up to main campus to walk the kids around a bit since they have never been. Steph exclaimed that she was in a whole new world. Yes, it is much different than Hutchinson, KS. They decided that they were going to roll down the hill from the campanile toward Memorial Stadium. Then they decided to run half-way back up and roll down again.

This is my favorite photo. It was of Steph mid-roll.
