Putting together a new desktop
I’ve been thinking about home building a desktop again, although likely not for me. I was looking at Pricewatch, and I marveled at the kind of machine I could afford to put together today. The last time I built one was 6 – 7 years ago. I lost its functionality on maternity leave with Ada when a lightning strike near our house took out the video card*. With a video card replacement–one we had sitting around, and not as good as the blown out one–my desktop became our file server. I haven’t had a desktop since then, instead using only a laptop.
I’m doing a little research anyhow. I’ve been out of the loop for a long time.
*I mean, really near our house. I was standing at the kitchen window doing dishes while Ada was napping. It is really hard to explain the feeling it gave me right before, but all of the sudden everything in front of my eyes turned orange and then yellow and then white. Then I heard this loud snap. I turned, and everything was blindingly white. It seemed like a really long time before I could see again, but it probably was just a few seconds. We also lost the cable modem and router.
If your planning on building your own system and running MacOSX on it then you should check out the Hackontosh site http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/f133/64334.htm for information on hardware compatibility.
