What Ada will learn over her summer vacation
I just had this interaction with Ada. She walked up to me with a play cell phone.
Ada: Mom, be quiet. I have to call for work*.
Me: Okay
Ada: Shhhh
I watch on as Ada babbles into her phone. She closes it, and stares at me.
Me: Can I talk now?
Ada: Yes. You need to help me find my computer.
Me: I think it is in your bedroom.
Ada: I need you to help me. I have to work for the money.
I assisted in finding her laptop and power cord. She set up shop beside me. She started it and started the word processor.
Ada: You typing your letters? I type my letters. Look, I typed three monies!
She has been home with me all day for only one week while I work. I need to try to re-arrange my schedule so I can spend some time with her in the afternoon doing something other than explaining to her that she needs to be quiet while I’m on a conference call and that my only purpose is to type letters in exchange for money.
Since my day is at an end, we are now playing with Scratch. I have a developer’s key for that laptop, and emulation set up on my laptop. I just need to actually develop something for her. Since I obviously spend a great deal of time typing letters for money, I don’t always feel like continuing my typing after the money-making period is over.
*Note: I wasn’t talking.
