A plea to my readers for help

The next time I am at the store, and I say “Do I have diced tomatoes?” could you psychically respond “YES! Quit buying them, even if they are on sale!” I’d appreciate it.

I’m spending this vacation afternoon organizing my kitchen. It is easier when the kids are at daycare. I wish it would stay organized, but it never does. I’d doing my can items which I group all like items together, but after time they end up in various places in the same cabinet. I have a lot of diced tomatoes.

I really want to make a smart cabinet for myself to read UPC symbols and keep a database of what food is in what cabinet. I press “In” and scan and I put things away, and then press “Out” and scan as I take things out. It wouldn’t be fool proof if everybody doesn’t use it (sort of like the organizing), but it would be nice to log into my cabinet while I’m at the store so I know what food I do have. I could do it with my laptop, but I really just want it integrated with my house. If I have to get another piece of equipment to do it, then I won’t.

I put this on my wishlist for December.

One Response so far.

Doesn’t someone in your household have an iPhone? There are Bluetooth barcode scanners, but you could use the camera in the iPhone or Macbook for the same purpose. http://www.bruji.com/cocoa/barcode.html You can sync your database to your iPhone, which you would (ideally) have with you when shopping.
