On noise and music and television
The pounding from last night never happened again, so perhaps it was the dryer, or the poltergeist that has been breaking my appliances. It was probably working on breaking the dryer. However, as I started to go to sleep, a cricket started chirping. Loudly. Really loudly. I got up to shut the window, and the window wasn’t open. That meant it was somewhere in the house near the window. I started banging stuff around the window, and it shut up. I couldn’t see where it was, so I went back to bed. Later, it started again. At 3:30am. This time, it was out in the open. That 3:30am noise violation earned the cricket the death penalty. Especially since it is rare for me to be able to lie down and go back to sleep. It took a little over an hour, and now I’m really tired.
I like to listen to music while I’m working-almost always instrumentals. I don’t want words because I find it distracting which is why I had to stop listening to NPR while I was working. I have a hard time concentrating in silence as well. I have a list of soundtracks that I’ve been listening to, and I recently discovered Magnatune–an independent music store that has a selection of ambient, classical, celtic, world, you name it music for me to listen to. The thing I like about Magnatune is that you can listen to an entire album before you buy it. When you do want to buy one, you can pay between $5 – $18, your choice, and 50% goes to the artist. There are also streaming and downloading subscriptions. Everything you buy is DRM free.
I don’t miss tv at all, but I am intrigued by Fringe. Luckily, like a lot of networks these days, Fox is airing the episodes online . However, you have to install their player, and mine gets halfway through downloading and stalls. Boo. I would like to watch it. The premiere is there now if you want to catch it.
Magnatune sounds great! I like that genre of music, and I love the idea that 50% goes to the artist. Thank you for the heads-up on that.
