Day 37: Brownies — Nature’s sleepaid

Ada helped me make brownies last night. I put her in charge of the dry ingredients. After I measured and put them in a large bowl, I gave her the danish whisk to let her stir while I combined the wet. When I was ready to combine the two, I surveyed the countertop and the floor and Ada’s pjs and decided it would behoove the brownies to redo the dry ingredients. I remeasured, helped Ada to once again whisk them together, and then combined the two. While I was spreading them in the pan, I gave Ada my whisk so she may enjoy her first childhood batter licking. She really got into it, getting batter not only on her face, but also in her just washed hair, the front of her pjs and also her feet.

Ada has had chocolate already (of course), but this is the first time she has had chocolate and espresso*. She loved the combination enough that the three times I asked if she was done, she hugged the whisk close and gave me a resounding “No.”

I cleaned her up, cleaned the countertops, swept the floors. I taught her the Hurry-And-Cook-Brownies chant. Then I decided it was time to put her to bed. Yikes–she just had not only chocolate, but also some espresso. I tucked her into our bed, and turned on Fraggle Rock. I went into the living room, started the photo import from my camera, and took the brownies out of the oven. I went back to our room to lie in bed with Ada to read and watch Fraggle Rock except when I got there, she was snoring. That happens just about never**.

*Yes, I put a bit of espresso in my brownies. It makes the chocolate taste that much more wonderful.

**The going right to sleep when put to bed. The snoring happens a lot. Ada is very much like me in that she rarely ever goes to sleep when put to bed. Even when I was a kid, I could never go to bed and just fall asleep. I would be awake for hours, entertaining myself in the dark. I can hear her when she goes to bed, talking to herself or singing.

Espresso sounds interesting – I’ll have to try that. Also, here’s some worthy reading:
