Focus issues repaired (for now?)
As soon as I got home — well, as soon as I got home and took care of a diaper and played shoot the plastic balls across the living room — I got out my camera. I could not take a single picture as long as I was in AF. It would not focus on anything, even with the flash enabled and thus, the camera doesn’t work. Just like the last time when my camera started behaving strangely, I went into my menu and reset all my camera settings. AF once again works, and I’m back in business.
Just like last time when I had camera weirdness, I hadn’t changed any settings when it started misbehaving. What caused it? A certain toddler whose name begins with “A?” And what setting would cause AF to just stop working? The only suggestion in my troubleshooting guide for when AF won’t focus is to shoot in MF. Great, thanks.
I’ve never really thought to, but maybe I should see if there is a firmware update for my camera.
2.0.3 is the latest, but none of them address AF. If you’ve ruled out dirty contacts (where the lens meets the body), and insufficient light/contrasting colors, and switch changes, and battery charge level, then it’s time to contact Canon, me thinks. In my experience (at least in my case) insufficient light and/or contrast in the colors of my subject are the most common reason for AF issues. The rest are from inadvertantly change a knob or a dial (which I understand you haven’t).
Something else to check out: aperture of f/2.8 or smaller (bigger number). Since I don’t have any faster lenses than f/2.8, it might explain why I don’t run into the issue.
I’ll check out cleaning the contacts, thanks! I did check that my lens was on correctly just incase Ada pushed the release button while I wasn’t looking, but taking the lens off and then putting it back on didn’t change anything. Also, I just charged my battery a week ago, so unless it is because it was pretty much fully charged, probably not that issue either.
However, things that it never had problems with on focus, it just wouldn’t. I could take pictures of nothing on AF. Although, it was nice to try MF anyhow. Some setting had to change because otherwise, why would resetting the camera make it work fine as suddenly as it stopped working? I’m just wondering if I do need to take my camera somewhere. I’m not having problems anymore, but if it happens again, I’ll take it in.
I do have to admit that I’m a little leary of cleaning the contacts myself. Is it easy?
